One person was killed and four others were injured in a crash early Monday morning involving three trucks and two cars at Nir Banim junction on Route 40, near Kiryat Malachi in the southern region of the country.

The driver of one of the trucks, 38, was declared dead at the scene by Magen David Adom paramedics.

Another man, 59, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, MDA said. Three other people suffered light injuries in the crash.

MDA said that paramedics found the driver of one of the trucks trapped in the vehicle, unconscious and with multiple injuries. Medics tried to administer treatment as emergency services worked to extract him from the truck, but he was showing no signs of life and they declared him dead.

Police opened an investigation into the crash.

Route 40 going south through Nir Banim junction was closed to traffic.

Two weeks ago a motorcyclist died in a crash on Route 40, at the Yakron Junction.
