An IDF soldier who went missing in the Golan Heights has been found dead, the army said Thursday, bringing to an end a widespread search to find him.

An investigation into the circumstances of his death was opened.

The soldier’s family has been notified.

IDF forces, police and volunteers had combed the Golan Heights and northern Israel after the soldier went missing there Wednesday.

The combat soldier reportedly left his unit on Wednesday during an exercise and was last seen near the town of Katzrin in the Golan Heights.

His parents had asked that his personal details not be released in order to maintain his privacy, an army spokesperson said.
