JERUSALEM (AP) — The winner of the Arab Idol reality show is adding another title: youth ambassador for the UN’s refugee agency for Palestinians.

On Saturday night, singer Mohammed Assaf became the first Palestinian to win the Arab world’s version of American Idol.

Assaf is from Gaza’s Khan Younis refugee camp, which is run by the UN’s Relief and Works Agency. The head of the agency on Sunday named Assaf as youth ambassador and said that “all Palestinians share in his success.”

Assaf says he is “truly honored” by the appointment. His win sparked huge celebrations in Palestinian cities, where crowds gathered to watch the final episode of Arab Idol on big screens.
