Thursday’s session comes day after Palestinian president accused Israel of imposing ‘apartheid’ policies, Rouhani slammed ‘rogue newcomer’ Trump

The UN General Assembly’s session Thursday includes speeches by Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun (morning session) and by Jordan’s King Abdullah II (afternoon session), a day after the monarch met with US President Donald Trump to discuss ways to advance the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

According to Jordanian news reports, Abdullah urged Trump to pressure Israel into returning to the negotiating table with the Palestinians.

The two leaders also reportedly discussed the fight against terrorism and areas for mutual cooperation in the region.

On Wednesday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told the General Assembly that Israel’s “colonial occupation” of the West Bank and East Jerusalem was breeding incitement and violence in the region.

The Palestinian leader told the UN that the international community was responsible for putting an end to Israeli policies that “incite religious tensions and could lead to a violent religious conflict.”

“We are entrusted and you are entrusted to end apartheid in Palestine,” Abbas said in a nearly 45-minute speech. “Can the world accept an apartheid regime in the 21st century?”

Also Wednesday, in his address, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani called Trump a “rogue newcomer” and Israel a “rogue and racist” state that should not enjoy security.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told UN representatives that Israel was ready for peace with Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world.
