Court: IDF reservist accused of using classified info to bet on Polymarket is Air Force major

A reservist suspected of using classified information to place bets on the Polymarket prediction site served as a major in the Israeli Air Force, a Tel Aviv Court reveals.

The defendant was indicted alongside his alleged accomplice last month on severe security offenses, as well as bribery and obstruction of justice, after they allegedly bet on the timing of Israel’s opening strikes that kicked off the 12-day war with Iran last June.

The case was subject to a court-issued gag order, which was partially lifted this evening following a petition from several Hebrew-language outlets. The details of the case were cleared for publication, but the defendants’ names are still under wraps.

According to the indictment, the soldier was briefed on the June operation in a confidential meeting a day before it was carried out, then notified his civilian accomplice about the offensive. When Israeli warplanes were on their way to attack Iran, the reservist let the civilian know, and the latter placed a bet on the war’s timing.

The pair allegedly made $162,663 after winning the bet, which they agreed to split evenly between themselves.

The suspects continued to place bets on the website this year until they were finally arrested and indicted last month.

In September 2025, the reservist allegedly passed his civilian friend information about a planned attack in Yemen, which won the pair thousands of dollars.

The reservist and civilian again bet in early January, attempting to predict the timing of the next round of fighting with Iran, the Kan public broadcaster reports, but canceled the bet after the civilian saw posts about his account on social media.

Out of apparent fear of being caught, the civilian altered his profile and then deleted the WhatsApp messages between him and the reservist, according to the report.

Prosecutors filed an indictment against the pair in the Tel Aviv District Court last month and sought to keep them in custody until the end of legal proceedings.

IDF confirms settler shot and killed Palestinian man at illegal settlement outpost earlier today

The IDF confirms that an extremist settler activist shot and killed a Palestinian man, and injured three others in an incident at an illegal settlement outpost close to the Palestinian village of Harmala in the Gush Etzion district of the West Bank earlier today.

According to a statement by the army, a “dispute” broke out at the illegal outpost, established in Area B of the West Bank, between “Israeli citizens” at the site, meaning the settlers who established the outpost, and Palestinians.

“During the dispute, an Israeli citizen shot toward [Palestinians] who had gathered in the area. As a result of the shooting, a resident of East Jerusalem was killed and three others were injured,” the IDF says.

IDF forces which arrived at the scene “acted to disperse the dispute, and to evacuate and treat the wounded,” the army adds.

Police said that the suspect was arrested and an investigation was opened.

The army statement says the outpost was established illegally last night “on private Palestinian territory” which was “immediately evacuated” by security forces earlier today, but then unlawfully re-established.

Personnel from the Defense Ministry’s Civil Administration department, protected by IDF and Border Police forces, evacuated the outpost overnight Wednesday. They are expected to do so again in short order.

Palestinian media outlets reported that the slain man was Muhammad al-Malahi, a resident of Sharafat in East Jerusalem, who died of his wounds after being shot in the head by the settler.

Malahi is the seventh Palestinian allegedly killed by settlers — civilians or off-duty reservists — in the past month.

Pentagon: US deploying uncrewed drone speedboats as part of Iran operations

The United States has deployed uncrewed drone speedboats for patrols as part of its operations against Iran, the Pentagon says, the first time Washington has confirmed using such vessels in an active conflict.

The deployment of the vessels — which can be used for surveillance or kamikaze strikes — has not been previously reported. It comes despite a series of setbacks in the US Navy’s years‑long effort to field a fleet of uncrewed surface vessels, Reuters reported last year.

In response to questions from Reuters, Tim Hawkins, a Pentagon spokesperson for Central Command, says unmanned vessels built by Maryland-based BlackSea, known as the Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft, or GARC, had been used for patrols as part of the US campaign against Iran, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury.”

“US forces continue to employ unmanned systems in the Middle East region, including surface drone assets like the GARC. This platform, in particular, has successfully logged over 450 underway hours and more than 2,200 nautical miles during maritime patrols in support of Operation Epic Fury,” Hawkins says in a statement.

US President Donald Trump announces that he is pushing off by another 10 days his deadline for Iran to agree to an American proposal to end the war.

“As per Iranian government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of energy plant destruction by 10 days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time,” Trump writes on Truth Social.

On Saturday, Trump announced that he would blow up Iran’s energy sites in 48 hours if it didn’t allow safe passage to tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

On the morning of the Monday evening deadline, Trump announced that he would be delaying it by five days, claiming that Iran had reached out and expressed interest in an agreement.

“Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the fake news media, and others. They are going very well,” Trump writes.

Hezbollah again denies any presence in Kuwait after latest Gulf state arrests

Lebanon’s Hezbollah again denies it has any presence in Kuwait, a day after the Gulf country announced more arrests of people allegedly linked to the Iran-backed terror group.

“For the third time, Hezbollah reiterates its complete denial of the accusations” made by Kuwait’s interior ministry, the group says in a statement.

“Hezbollah has no presence in the state of Kuwait or any other country,” the statement adds, calling the accusations “removed from reality and devoid of truth.”

Yesterday, Kuwait’s interior ministry said the country had arrested six people linked to Hezbollah who were planning “assassinations targeting symbols and leaders of the state” and who allegedly “recruited people to carry out these missions.” Five of the six people were Kuwaiti nationals, it said.

It was at least the third set of arrests linked to Hezbollah that Kuwait has announced in recent weeks.

NYC Council passes synagogue protection legislation by veto-proof majority

The New York City Council passes a bill meant to protect synagogues by a vote of 44 in favor, five opposed, and one abstention.

The legislation will require police to formulate and make public plans to “contain the risk of physical obstruction, physical injury, intimidation, and interference at places of religious worship.”

The bill, part of City Council Speaker Julie Menin’s larger plan to combat antisemitism in the city, came in response to two vitriolic protests outside New York City synagogues in recent months.

The legislation became a flashpoint because of concerns over free speech limitations, with leftist and anti-Israel groups rallying against the bill.

Protesters demonstrate against legislation meant to protect houses of worship, at City Hall in Manhattan, March 26, 2026. (Luke Tress/Times of Israel)

The bill states that police must carry out protection measures while “preserving and protecting the rights to free speech, assembly, and protest,” and Menin has said the legislation will not restrict protests.

The first iteration of the legislation called for police to set up a buffer zone of up to 100 feet around houses of worship, but the updated text does not establish any zones against protests.

The legislation now heads to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who can reject the measure or sign it into law.

Mamdani has not confirmed whether he will approve the legislation and his base is opposed to the bill.

The City Council can override a mayoral veto with a two-thirds majority; however, meaning the 44 votes in favor are enough to pass the bill into law, even if Mamdani issues a veto.

Bennett says political echelon preventing IDF from winning ‘in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran’

Former prime minister Naftali Bennett accuses the government of putting politics ahead of national security, calling on the government to conscript ultra-Orthodox men amid ongoing IDF warnings about a deepening manpower shortage.

“There is a political echelon here that prevents the IDF from winning,” Bennett says during an interview with Channel 12, arguing that the current leadership “does not know how to win anywhere — not in Gaza nor in Lebanon, or Iran.”

“The IDF is 20,000 soldiers short. There are 100,000 young Haredim of military age in good health today, and if they only recruited a fifth of them, there would be no problem. But the government puts politics above everything, and that’s why we’ve reached this point,” he says.

Bennett, who is running in the upcoming national election, says further that “we established a Haredi state here,” calling for the ultra-Orthodox community to integrate into the military, the workforce, and the education system, and for government benefits to be conditioned on employment and service.

“Whoever doesn’t work doesn’t get a penny. Whoever doesn’t serve doesn’t get a penny,” he says.

Despite his criticism, Bennett says he supports the ongoing war, calling it justified and praising the IDF, but stresses that success must be measured by concrete strategic outcomes rather than declarations of victory.

Bennett, who remains the leading frontrunner to unseat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, explicitly rules out joining any government with him, declaring, “I’m the only one who can replace Netanyahu.”

IDF Central Command chief said to warn ministers that West Bank policy stretching forces thin

IDF Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth warned ministers during a security cabinet meeting last night that government policy in the West Bank is placing a growing strain on the IDF’s already stretched manpower, Channel 12 reports.

According to the report, Bluth told ministers that over the past year, they approved the establishment of numerous settlements in the Jordan Valley and across the West Bank — developments that require increased security coverage.

“This is your policy,” Bluth reportedly said, “but it requires security and a full protection package, because the reality on the ground has completely changed — and that requires manpower.”

Ministers were also shown footage of settler violence incidents during the meeting, according to Channel 12.

Bluth’s remarks echo an earlier Channel 13 report in which IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir was said to warn ministers at the same meeting that the military is at risk of “collapsing in on itself” under mounting operational demands and a growing manpower shortage.

‘Suspicion growing’ that settler activist who died Saturday was killed in terror attack, say police, Shin Bet

The police and Shin Bet issue a joint statement saying that the “suspicion is growing” that Yehuda Sherman, the settler activist who died last Saturday close to the illegal West Bank outpost where he lived, was killed in a terror attack.

The circumstances of the incident in which Sherman died have remained unclear. Settler activists and far-right politicians immediately alleged that the incident was a terror attack, but the security services have taken several days to evaluate what happened.

The two agencies state that the Palestinian suspect who has been arrested and questioned over the incident “admitted to the acts attributed to him,” adding, however, that “the investigation is ongoing.”

A police spokesperson does not immediately clarify what specifically the suspect admitted to police.

Moreover, Palestinians say that such purported confessions are often made while under duress.

The suspect has also been barred from meeting with a lawyer since he was arrested on Saturday — a practice that Israel’s military court system allows against Palestinians.

“According to the findings of the investigative team… which includes the Shin Bet, investigators from the Judea and Samaria District Police, and the IDF, suspicion is growing that this was a deliberate attack on the deceased’s vehicle, motivated by nationalist motives,” the two agencies say in their joint statement.

Sherman, a resident of the illegal settlement outpost of Shuva Yisrael Farms in the northern West Bank, close to the settlement of Homesh, was killed on Saturday afternoon when the ATV he was traveling in was hit by a Palestinian vehicle.

According to his brother who was in the vehicle with Sherman at the time, the driver of the Palestinian vehicle had been waiting for them, and that when they passed him, he chased after them and rammed their ATV off a cliff edge.

Hezbollah launched some 20 rockets at north; most were intercepted, says IDF

Hezbollah launched a barrage of some 20 rockets at northern Israel a short while ago.

The rockets triggered sirens in Haifa and across the Galilee.

According to the IDF, most of the rockets were intercepted by air defenses, and others were allowed to hit open areas.

There are no immediate reports of injuries.

IDF spokesman says targeted assassinations of Iranian leaders will continue

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin vows that the military will continue to hunt down Iranian leaders, following the killing of IRGC Navy chief Alireza Tangsiri in Bandar Abbas overnight.

“The eliminations will not stop; we will continue to pursue anyone who threatens Israel,” he says.

Defrin says the military has hit more than 1,000 targets of Iran’s weapon production industries so far amid the war.

“We are talking about the factories that produce the missiles, the drones and defense systems,” he says in a press conference.

Defrin says the IDF is striking “all assets of the weapons [industries]. We will also reach the sub-contractors.”

“In the coming days, we will deepen the achievement and distance this threat for a long time,” he adds.

Lapid: Israel facing security disaster, must immediately draft ultra-Orthodox, fight ‘Jewish terrorism’

Opposition Leader Yair Lapid warns that Israel is facing another security disaster after IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir reportedly raised “10 red flags” during a cabinet meeting, cautioning that the military could soon collapse under mounting operational demands and a deepening manpower shortage.

“The chief of staff laid out before the cabinet a whole series of threats, most of which cannot be detailed on camera, but the bottom line is this: the government is sending the army into a multi-front war without a strategy, without sufficient resources, and with too few soldiers,” Lapid says during a press conference.

“This time, the government will not be able to say, ‘I didn’t know.’ This is the chief of staff they appointed, and they will not be able to politicize him and shift the blame onto him,” Lapid says, adding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be able to say, “I am not responsible.”

The Yesh Atid leader calls on the government to “stop its cowardice” and “immediately halt all funding to ultra-Orthodox draft evaders, send the military police after deserters, and draft the ultra-Orthodox without hesitation.”

Noting that Zamir warned that he is being forced to deploy more and more of his limited forces to the West Bank due to the rise in violent settler attacks, Lapid says the government “must fight Jewish terrorism with every available means.”

He further calls on the government to “strip authority” from far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, “who openly supports Jewish terrorists,” and to “deploy all enforcement capabilities.”

“For 13 years, I have been a member of security cabinets and the most sensitive security forums of the State of Israel,” Lapid notes, warning that “in all those 13 years, I do not recall a warning as severe as the one delivered last night.”

An IDF soldier was killed and four others were wounded in a Hezbollah anti-tank missile attack in southern Lebanon earlier today, the military announces.

The slain soldier is named as Sgt. Aviaad Elchanan Volansky, 21, of the 7th Armored Brigade’s 77th Battalion, from Jerusalem.

Volansky is the son of Defense Establishment Comptroller Brig. Gen. (res.) Yair Volansky, who previously commanded the 401st Armored Brigade.

According to an initial IDF probe, Hezbollah operatives launched two anti-tank missiles from an area north of the Litani River in the eastern sector of southern Lebanon, targeting an Israeli Merkava tank.

The first missile was intercepted by the Merkava’s TROPHY active protection system, while the second struck the tank, killing Volansky and wounding other crewmembers, according to the probe.

The IDF says two officers and two soldiers of the 77th Battalion were lightly wounded in the incident.

Volansky is the fourth IDF soldier to be killed in Israel’s renewed ground offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Report: Israel expects notice but no influence on Trump’s Iran ultimatum; Iran can sustain missile fire for weeks

Israel expects to be notified in advance of US President Donald Trump’s anticipated five-day ultimatum to Iran, which is set to expire this weekend, as to whether a ceasefire will be announced, but believes its ability to influence the decision is currently limited, Channel 12 reports.

According to the report, Israeli officials assess that a potential ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran could be reached at any moment. However, gaps reportedly remain, and escalation remains a viable scenario.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly spoke earlier today with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reiterating Israel’s red lines on any emerging deal.

Meanwhile, Channel 12 reports that a senior security official said in a closed-door meeting that Iran can sustain its current rate of missile fire for weeks, citing sufficient launchers and operational cells to pace and prolong attacks.

Radical settlers set up outpost in Area A of West Bank, Palestinian media reports

Radical settler activists appear to have established an illegal settlement outpost in Area A of the West Bank, territory which is supposedly under full civilian and security control of the Palestinian Authority.

According to reports in Palestinian media, the outpost is located close to the Palestinian town of Jaba, south of Jenin, and just north of the Palestinian village of Beit Imrin.

The incident last Saturday in which radical settler activist Yehuda Sherman was killed in disputed circumstances took place close to Beit Imrin and the illegal settlement outpost of Shuva Yisrael Farm, where Sherman lived.

The incursion by settler activists into Area A of the West Bank appears to be a response to that incident, which Sherman’s associates, family, and the Israeli far-right in general have described as a terror attack.

From pictures posted by Palestinian outlets, the settlers appear to have taken up residence in an existing stone building and raised an Israeli flag there.

Peace Now says that although extremely rare, settlement outposts have been established previously in Area A, but were subsequently evacuated by Israeli security forces.

It is illegal for Israeli citizens to enter Area A without express permission from the IDF.

The Israeli authorities are aware of the new outpost, and enforcement measures will likely take place in the near future, The Times of Israel understands.

According to Peace Now, another two illegal settlement outposts were established this week, one in Area B close to the Palestinian village of Tayasir in the northern West Bank, and one close to the Palestinian village of Harmala in the Gush Etzion district in Area C.

Outposts in Area B are also highly unusual, although several have been established in recent months.

Palestinian allegedly shot by settlers said to succumb to wounds; suspect arrested

Palestinian media outlets report that Muhammad al-Malahi, a resident of Sharafat in East Jerusalem, has died of his wounds after being shot in the head earlier by settlers east of Bethlehem.

Police say they arrived at the scene and arrested a suspect involved in the incident.

Malahi is the seventh Palestinian allegedly killed by settlers — civilians or off-duty reservists — in the past month.

The Israeli Air Force says it struck dozens of Iranian military sites, including ballistic missile launch and storage sites, in western Iran in the past day.

In Kermanshah and Dezful, the military says IAF aircraft dropped some 70 bombs on sites used by Iran to store and launch ballistic missiles, along with air defense systems.

The IDF says that Iranian soldiers operating at the sites were killed in the strikes.

The IDF Home Front Command says its current wartime guidelines are being extended until Saturday night at least, meaning educational activities will remain prohibited in most parts of the country.

By Saturday at 8 p.m., another assessment will be conducted by the Home Front Command.

Under the current guidelines, educational institutions can operate, provided there is an adequate shelter that can be reached in time, in some areas of the north, south and West Bank.

A full list of locales can be found on the Home Front Command’s website. Gatherings of up to 100 people indoors and 50 people outdoors are also permitted, under the same conditions in those areas.

In the rest of the country, educational activities are still prohibited. Gatherings are limited to 50 people, provided a shelter can be reached in time, and workplaces can operate under the same conditions.

Official from mediating country: Trump leaning toward ground invasion, convinced Iran will then capitulate

An official from one of the countries mediating between the US and Iran tells The Times of Israel that US President Donald Trump appears to be leaning toward ordering a US ground operation against Iran, with Washington convinced Tehran will buckle under such military pressure.

The official intimately familiar with the mediation efforts says the US privately recognizes that Iran is not likely to agree to the concessions presented in Washington’s 15-point plan and has dispatched thousands of troops to the region in order to capture Tehran’s Kharg Island on Trump’s orders.

A second official from a mediating country warns that while the US may be able to capture the island, holding onto it for an extended period of time will require many more soldiers and an extended period of fighting — far beyond the four-to-six week window that Washington has told the public that the war would last. While Saturday will be the four-week mark, the US still claims to be well ahead of schedule.

Both officials from mediating countries say that the Islamic Republic is not likely to capitulate, regardless of whether a ground operation moves ahead.

They insist that Iran will not agree to terms now that it wasn’t willing to accept before the US launched the war.

Trump on Monday announced that he was delaying until Friday his deadline for Iran to agree to his 15-point proposal for ending the war or face a bombing campaign against its power plants.

Thousands of additional US Marine troops are slated to arrive in the region around that new deadline.

A senior Hezbollah commander in the terror group’s anti-tank missile unit was killed in an Israeli Air Force strike in Lebanon last night, the military announces.

The IDF says Hassan Mohammad Bashir was killed in the Hajir area.

Bashir had commanded and advanced hundreds of anti-tank missile attacks against Israeli troops and civilians in the past two years, the military says.

The IDF says that in recent months, Bashir had begun to work with Hezbollah’s anti-tank forces that are based north of the Litani River, “and has since been involved in training many operatives.”

France says that 35 countries joined a discussion today on working to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid the Iran war.

Today’s videoconference of defense staff chiefs focused on how to reopen shipping “once the intensity of hostilities has sufficiently decreased,” France’s Defense Ministry says.

That could entail a “strictly defensive” mission to escort commercial vessels and restore freedom of navigation, the ministry adds.

The chief of the IDF Northern Command, Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo, says the military has killed more than 750 Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon since hostilities escalated amid the war with Iran.

“We have expanded the ground operation one step further to widen the security zone. We are operating according to an organized plan to strike and push back the enemy and to distance the threat for better protection of the residents of the north,” Milo says during an assessment in southern Lebanon.

“So far, we have eliminated more than 750 terrorists, destroyed infrastructure throughout Lebanon, and we continue the deep strikes against the organization’s centers of gravity. We are applying pressure on Hezbollah, pushing it northward and destroying its capabilities,” he says, according to remarks provided by the IDF.

Magen David Adom says that minutes after a paramedic helped a woman through an emergency birth at her home in Tel Aviv this morning, a siren signaling an Iranian ballistic missile sounded.

MDA paramedic Dr. Gal Rosen, the EMT team, the parents, Violet and Nikola, and their newborn baby were forced to quickly evacuate to a shelter.

Rosen, wearing a ballistic vest and helmet, ran with the minutes-old newborn in his arms to reach a shelter.

“In the very next moment, once it was safe, I handed him straight to his father,” Rosen said. “Seeing a half-hour-old baby in a public shelter, surrounded by a family full of blessings and joy, is something you don’t forget.”

Thousands of Israelis are facing long queues at land border crossings with Egypt and Jordan, as severe restrictions on the country’s airspace are limiting departures via Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.

As of 4 p.m. on Thursday, a total of 5,055 Israelis left the country passing through land border crossings with Egypt and Jordan, to travel overseas, according to data by the Population and Immigration Authority. Only 1,133 Israelis departed the country via air travel.

In a blow to travelers ahead of Passover, starting next week, Israel on Monday imposed further restrictions on flight operations currently served solely by Israeli airlines from Ben Gurion, the country’s main international gateway.

Since the closure of Israel’s airspace to most commercial civilian air traffic on February 28, a total of 72,184 Israelis left the country via land border crossings and 57,121 via air travel, according to data by the Population and Immigration Authority.

Iraq condemns any ‘aggression, targeting’ of Gulf states, Jordan

Iraq condemns the targeting of the Gulf states and Jordan, a day after these countries issued a joint statement demanding that Baghdad act to prevent attacks from its territory.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry “affirms the government’s categorical condemnation of any aggression or targeting of the Gulf countries and the Kingdom of Jordan,” it says in a statement, adding that it is prepared to “work jointly to address them [attacks] responsibly and swiftly.”

Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq have been responsible for some of the attacks on Gulf states in recent weeks.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir reportedly warned during a security cabinet meeting last night that the military will “collapse in on itself,” as it faces mounting operational demands and a growing manpower shortage.

“I am raising 10 red flags before you,” Zamir reportedly told ministers, according to Channel 13 news.

“The IDF now needs a conscription law, a reserve duty law, and a law to extend mandatory service,” he is quoted as saying. “Before long, the IDF will not be ready for its routine missions and the reserve system will not hold.”

Zamir has issued similar warnings in recent months. In January, he sent a pointed letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials, warning that the shortage of soldiers could harm military readiness in the very near future.

Since the war in Gaza was sparked by the Hamas-led onslaught of October 7, 2023, the military has repeatedly told lawmakers that it lacks 12,000 troops due to the strain of the conflict and other military challenges.

Ultra-Orthodox parties have demanded a law to keep their constituencies out of the military after the High Court in June 2024 ruled that there was no legal basis for the Haredi yeshiva students’ decades-long blanket exemption from the draft. Some 80,000 ultra-Orthodox men aged between 18 and 24 are currently believed to be eligible for military service, but have not enlisted.

Reports: Two Palestinians wounded by settler gunfire in Bethlehem area

Palestinian media outlets report that two Palestinians were wounded by live fire from settlers near an outpost established east of Bethlehem.

Earlier, reports said settlers had set up an outpost in the area.

Several settler attacks in the West Bank were reported earlier today, as the already rampant phenomenon has surged since the start of the Iran war.

Hezbollah has fired more than 100 rockets at Israel today, in addition to dozens launched at troops operating in southern Lebanon, according to the IDF.

One rocket strike this afternoon in Nahariya killed a man and wounded 14 others. Overnight, Hezbollah fired several missiles at central Israel, which the IDF said were intercepted.

Asked if his Friday deadline still stands for Iran to accept the US offer for a deal or see its energy sites bombed, US President Donald Trump says, “I don’t know.”

Responding to questions from reporters at a White House cabinet meeting, Trump says he’ll reassess after being updated by his negotiators, Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and Vice President JD Vance.

“They will tell me whether or not they think it’s going along, and if it’s not going along, maybe not,” he says. “We have a lot of time. A day in Trump time — that’s an eternity.”

Asked whether it’s possible to end the war if Iran still holds on to its stockpiles of enriched uranium, Trump responds, “You’re going to have to see… we’re roaming free… I can’t talk to you about it.”

As for the Strait of Hormuz, Trump insists that the US isn’t the one that even needs the channel, as it exports its oil through other routes. “We don’t need the Hormuz Strait. We have so much oil. We have twice the amount of oil as Saudi Arabia or Russia.”

He proceeds to boast about having “aced” a cognitive test.

Before ending the cabinet meeting, Trump returns to touting his decision to strike Iran.

“I’ve done a great favor for the world, and the world has not been reciprocal.”

Magen David Adom updates the toll of the Hezbollah rocket strike on Nahariya to one dead and 14 physically wounded.

MDA medics declared the death of a man in his 30s at the scene, and treated a man in his 50s who was seriously injured by shrapnel.

Another 13 are listed in good condition after also being hit by shrapnel or the blast, the ambulance service says.

MDA adds that it also treated 11 for acute anxiety.

All 25 were taken to a hospital.

Trump says ‘gift’ from Iran was allowing 8 oil tankers to pass through Strait

Confirming The Times of Israel’s reporting, US President Donald Trump says the present that Iran gave that convinced him Tehran is serious about potentially reaching a deal was allowing the safe passage of a number of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

“They said, ‘To show you the fact that we’re real and solid, we’re going to let you have eight big boats of oil,'” Trump recalls during a cabinet meeting.

“And then I watched the news… and they said there are eight boats that are going right up the middle of the Hormuz Strait,” he continues, claiming the tankers were Pakistani-flagged.

While several tankers did indeed manage to cross through the channel earlier this week, there has been no public reporting about eight tankers specifically and none of the successfully floating tankers that have been reported since Sunday were Pakistani-flagged.

Trump goes on to reiterate that Iran wants to make a deal because “they have been just beat to shit.”

Asked if he wants to control Iranian oil, Trump says “it’s an option, but I wouldn’t talk about it.”

The Israeli Air Force carried out several waves of airstrikes in Iran in the past day, targeting dozens of Iranian weapon production facilities, the military says.

According to the military, 60 IAF fighter jets dropped more than 150 bombs on the facilities near Tehran and in central Iran.

In a wave of strikes in Isfahan overnight, the military says it bombed several weapon manufacturing sites, including one belonging to the IRGC Quds Force, and a facility used to manufacture air defense systems.

In the Parchin area, east of Tehran, the IDF says it bombed “the Iranian regime’s most central facility for the production of missiles and defense systems.”

The IDF says the targets at Parchin included a facility used to develop air defense systems; a plant for casting and filling warheads with explosives; a site for mixing and casting engines for the development of ballistic missiles; and a facility for producing critical components for solid-fuel ballistic missiles.

No injuries reported after Iranian ballistic missile intercepted, says IDF

No injuries are reported following Iran’s latest ballistic missile attack, the ninth since this morning.

The missile, which triggered sirens across central Israel, was intercepted by air defenses, according to the IDF.

257 incidents of settler violence carried out against Palestinians in 25 days, says watchdog

The Yesh Din organization says there have been 257 incidents of extremist settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank in the 25 days since the war with Iran began, and accuses the state of supporting the violence due to what it describes as minimal efforts by security services to prevent it or bring those responsible to justice.

These attacks include assault, damage to property and land seizures against 116 Palestinian villages, towns and communities.

Yesh Din, which tracks settler violence, notes that the last week has witnessed incidents of “mass violence” in which large numbers of settler extremists have participated in assaults against dozens of Palestinian towns and villages.

It notes that settler extremists have shot dead six Palestinians since the war with Iran began, and that as far as the group is aware, no suspects have been arrested.

The organization says its figures are based on cross-referenced public statements and reports from different sources.

“Behind the ‘dry’ figure of more than 10 incidents per day, there are the Palestinian victims of violence who the security forces and law enforcement authorities have completely abandoned, and who remain defenseless and without justice,” Yesh Din says.

“The pogroms we saw last week, in which dozens and perhaps even hundreds of people participated, received minimal enforcement activity from the authorities — both in advance preparation [for the attacks], during the disturbances and in law enforcement afterwards,” the organization adds. “All of this points to a systematic policy of state support for violence and, in fact, of support for expulsion and ethnic cleansing.”

Witkoff: ‘Strong signs’ Iran will recognize it has no choice but to take US ceasefire offer

(Jim WATSON / AFP)

US special envoy Steve Witkoff says there are “strong signs” the US will be able to convince Iran that it has no better option than to accept Washington’s 15-point plan for ending the war.

“Against [the] backdrop of our compelling military successes in [Operation] Epic Fury, we have had multiple reach-outs from the region and others who want to play a role in ending this conflict peacefully,” Witkoff says in remarks at a White House cabinet meeting.

He says the US has crafted a “15-point action list that forms the framework for a peace deal,” which has been presented to Iran through Pakistani mediators. “This has resulted in strong and positive messaging.”

“If we can convince Iran that this is the inflection point, with no good alternatives for them other than more death and destruction, [and] we have strong signs that this is a possibility,” he says.

“If a deal happens, it will be great for the country of Iran, for the entire region and the world at large,” Witkoff continues.

“Iran is looking for an off-ramp following your powerful threat on Saturday,” he says, referring to US President Donald Trump’s ultimatum that he will bomb Iran’s energy plants if it doesn’t allow ships to freely pass through the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Trump subsequently pushed off that threat by five days, claiming that Iran had reached out, expressing willingness to make a deal in the interim.

“You have instructed us that your preference is always peace and that we should make that our priority. We have delivered that message, along with the 15 points for peace. We have told Iran one last thing, ‘Don’t miscalculate again,'” Witkoff says.

Reflecting on the talks with Iran that preceded the war, Witkoff insists that he and fellow American negotiator Jared Kushner “exhausted all efforts on behalf of the peaceful resolution as you directed.”

“The Iranians were there to buy time until a weaker president arrived. This was a flawed strategy,” Witkoff asserts.

The Israeli military says it has pushed even more forces deeper into southern Lebanon as part of an expanded buffer zone after Hezbollah began attacking Israel earlier this month.

The 162nd Division began a raid several days ago in the western sector of southern Lebanon. The IDF says the “targeted ground operation against key targets” is aimed at expanding “the security zone.”

Defense Minister Israel Katz said this week that the IDF would control a “security zone” in southern Lebanon, up to the Litani River, until the threat of Hezbollah is removed.

Before the troops pushed into the area, the IDF says, it carried out massive airstrikes and artillery shelling to remove threats to the forces.

So far, the IDF reports that the division has killed some 20 Hezbollah operatives.

In addition to the 162nd, another four IDF divisions are deployed to southern Lebanon: the 146th is deployed defensively to the western sector; the 91st and 36th are carrying out raids in the eastern sector; and the 210th is stationed in the Mount Dov area.

The IDF has been preparing to deploy a sixth division, the 98th — an elite formation of paratroopers and commando units — in southern Lebanon, as part of its efforts to establish the new security zone and push away the threat of Hezbollah from the border.

US Vice President JD Vance claims Iran’s “conventional military is effectively destroyed,” giving the US “options” as the war proceeds.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Vance says the options include diplomatic negotiations and further military strikes.

“You talk about people who walk into a crowded supermarket and have a vest on, and they blow up the vest, and a couple of people get killed, and that’s a terrible tragedy. What happens when what’s on the vest… can kill tens of thousands of people,” Vance says, warning of the dangers of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Speaking next, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warns that if the Iranians had “a nuclear weapon, they could kill millions of Americans in the future.”

US President Donald Trump chimes in, falsely claiming that former secretary of state Antony Blinken said yesterday that the previous administration should have struck Iran the way that the current one is.

Blinken criticized Trump’s handling of the war and predicted that it could end soon with Trump declaring victory as the markets continue to dip.

Later in the meeting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth berates the media for what he claims is its false coverage of the war, insisting that the US is decisively defeating Iran and that the press is reporting otherwise: “Behind every fake news story, there’s an F35 pilot executing a dangerous mission. My message to the media is: get it right.”

Trump: ‘I don’t know if we’ll be able’ to make a deal to end Iran war; a nuclear Iran would target Israel first, then the neighbors, then us

Three days after US President Donald Trump declared that an agreement with Iran to end the ongoing war was likely, he now expresses more skepticism about those chances.

“I don’t know if we’ll be able to do that,” Trump says in opening remarks at a cabinet meeting. “They’re lousy fighters, but they’re great negotiators.”

Trump still insists that he’s not the one desperate for an agreement: “They are begging to make a deal. Not me.”

“I’m the opposite of desperate to make a deal. I don’t care! We have other targets we want to hit before we leave.”

“We estimated [at the beginning of the war] it would take approximately four to six weeks to achieve our mission. Twenty-six days in, we’re extremely, extremely ahead of schedule,” Trump claims.

“If they make the right deal, then the Strait [of Hormuz] will open up,” Trump adds.

In the meantime, he says, the US will continue its attacks.

Earlier today, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Iran’s negotiators are acting “strange” and that “they better get serious soon… [or] it won’t be pretty.”

Trump claims that Tehran knows it has been defeated. “The Iranian regime is now admitting to itself that they have been decisively defeated. They’re saying to people, this is a disaster. They know. That’s why they’re talking to us,” he says.

Trump repeats his contention that the regime in Iran was on track to get nuclear weapons within two to four weeks when the US resorted to bombing its nuclear sites last June. If they had attained the bomb, he says, they would have used it — and first on Israel.

“They want to take over the Middle East, not just Israel,” he says of the regime. “Certainly, Israel would have been the first on their list… They would have used a nuclear weapon on Israel and they would have used it on the other neighbors. And then they would have come after us.”

“You cannot give lunatics a nuclear weapon,” he says, saying that he had to stop supreme leader Ali Khamenei, a “maniac… no longer with us,” from “blowing up the world, blowing up the Middle East, and blowing up our country. And we did that.”

Were the US not to have resorted to force against the regime, he says, it would have caused a fire that “could have blown up big portions of the world, if not the whole thing.”

Iran says it responded to 15-point US plan, is awaiting Washington’s reply

Iran has responded through unnamed intermediaries to a 15-point US plan to end the war, news agency Tasnim reports, and is now waiting for Washington’s reply.

The exact contents of the US plan, conveyed to Iran via Pakistan according to Pakistani officials, are not officially known.

“Iran’s response to the 15 points proposed by the US was officially sent last night through intermediaries, and Iran is awaiting the other side’s response,” Tasnim reports, citing an informed source.

Iranian official says Tehran reviewed US proposal, found it ‘one-sided and unfair’

Iran’s initial response to the US proposal to end the war, which was conveyed to Pakistan, was that it was “one-sided and unfair,” a senior Iranian official tells Reuters, adding that a path forward might still be found if realism prevails in Washington.

The official says the proposal “was reviewed in detail on Wednesday night by senior Iranian officials and the representative of Iran’s supreme leader.”

“In brief, the proposal suggests that Iran would relinquish its ability to defend itself in exchange for a vague plan to lift sanctions,” he says, adding that it lacks the minimum requirements for success.

He says there is “still no arrangement for negotiations, and no plan for talks appears realistic at this stage,” as Turkey and Pakistan try to help “establish common ground between Iran and the United States and reduce differences.”

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement stands ready to strike the key Red Sea waterway again in solidarity with Tehran, one Houthi leader tells Reuters, a move that would deepen a global oil and economic crisis brought on by the Middle East war.

If the Houthis open a new front in the conflict, one obvious target would be the Bab el-Mandeb Strait off the coast of Yemen, a key shipping chokepoint and narrow passageway that controls sea traffic towards the Suez Canal after Iran effectively shut the critical Strait of Hormuz.

“We stand fully militarily ready with all options. As for other details having to do with determining zero hour they are left to leadership and we are monitoring and following up with the developments and will know when is the suitable time to move,” says the Houthi leader, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic.

“Until now Iran is doing well and is defeating the enemy every day and the battle is going in its direction. If anything contrary to this happens then we can assess.”

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty meets Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut amid a swirl of diplomatic discussions about the Iran war.

Abdelatty says that, in shuttling messages between Iran and the United States, Egypt has noted a mutual “desire for calm, for the exploration of negotiations” on both sides. But he warns that the talks have not yielded “specific conclusions.”

When asked about Egypt’s role in mediating between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah, he tells reporters that Egyptian diplomats are voicing to all parties their opposition to Israeli occupation and destruction of civilian infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

He says the goal is to prevent the region “from sinking into a state of chaos from which it cannot emerge.”

7 Palestinians said injured in settler attack in Tulkarm area of the West Bank

Palestinian media outlets report that seven Palestinian shepherds have been injured in a settler attack in the al-Sahl area east of Tulkarm in the West Bank.

According to the reports, the attack led to clashes between the sides.

The Red Crescent says it treated seven injured people who were beaten.

It is also reported that IDF forces detained one of the Palestinians at the scene after he was injured.

No arrests of Israelis are reported. The IDF has not yet responded.

IDF says over 30 Hezbollah members killed in recent days, including 10 Radwan fighters

More than 30 Hezbollah operatives, including 10 members of the terror group’s elite Radwan Force, were killed in one area of southern Lebanon during ground operations in recent days, the military says.

The military says troops operating with the 91st “Galilee” Regional Division killed the 30 operatives with tank shelling, sniper fire, drone strikes, and by directing airstrikes in their area of operations.

MK’s claim there are ‘no innocents in Jenin’ draws incitement complaint to Knesset Ethics Committee

Head of the Hadash-Ta’al party MK Ayman Odeh files a formal complaint to the Knesset Ethics Committee against MK Yitzhak Kroizer of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party for stating last night from the Knesset podium that there are “no innocent civilians or innocent children” in the Palestinian West Bank city of Jenin.

Odeh says Kroizer’s comments “do severe harm to basic values of humanity, of human beings as human beings,” and are unacceptable for a member of Knesset to say.

“A sweeping denial of the existence of innocent people, especially children, alongside clear incitement to harm them, legitimizes murder and harm to civilians, and echoes dangerous notions of dehumanization,” says Odeh in his complaint.

He says that comments such as those from Kroizer have influenced Jewish extremists in the West Bank, “the results of which can be seen day and night with the nationalist terror attacks against Palestinians in the occupied territories of 1967.”

Odeh calls on the Knesset Ethics Committee to sanction Kroizer for “incitement against children and innocent people.”

In his speech, Kroizer was defending Israeli security services over an incident this month in which Border Police officers shot and killed a Palestinian couple and their two young children in their car in the West Bank village of Tammun. The officers claim the car sped toward them. An investigation has been launched, although the officers have yet to be questioned.

“I stand behind IDF soldiers in every situation. Even if the collateral damage is children or women — it does not matter to me,” Kroizer said.

“In Jenin, there are no innocent civilians. In Jenin, there are no innocent children. Those who were born in 2006 during the expulsion from Gush Katif [Israel’s unilateral Disengagement from Gaza, which actually took place in 2005] were the Nukhba fighters of 2026 on October 7 [2023]. Therefore, I have no feeling of mercy for my enemies.”

UAE says it intercepted 15 Iranian missiles, 11 drones today

The United Arab Emirates intercepted 15 ballistic missiles and 11 drones fired by Iran today, says the Emirati defense ministry, a day that has seen heavy missile fire on Israel as well.

Two people were killed this morning in Abu Dhabi by debris from one of the intercepted missiles, and three were wounded. In total, 10 people have been killed in the UAE from Iranian attacks amid the current war.

Since the start of the US-Israel campaign against Iran on February 28, the UAE has been the most targeted country by Iran, facing 372 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,826 drones.

The IDF announces that it killed the top leadership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, including its commander, Alireza Tangsiri.

The overnight Israeli Air Force strike in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas was carried out while Tangsiri was meeting with senior officers of the IRGC Navy.

In addition to Tangsiri, the IDF says the strike also killed the IRGC Navy’s intelligence chief, Behnam Rezaei. The military does not immediately name other top commanders killed in the strike.

Tangsiri served as the IRGC Navy chief for the past eight years. The military says that “over the years, Tangsiri was responsible for attacks on oil tankers and commercial vessels and personally threatened the freedom of navigation and trade in the Strait of Hormuz and the international maritime domain.”

During the current war, the IDF says he “led efforts to close the Strait of Hormuz and advanced terror attacks in the maritime domain, one of the primary figures responsible for disrupting the global economy.”

The IDF says the killing of Tangsiri and the IRGC Navy leadership “constitutes an additional significant blow to the command-and-control arrays of the IRGC and its abilities to orchestrate terror activities in the maritime domain against countries in the region.”

Putin says Iran war consequences could be as serious as those of COVID pandemic

Russian President Vladimir Putin says it is hard to predict the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East, but that some have compared the potential impact to that of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The conflict, Putin says, is causing significant damage to international logistics, production and supply chains while putting intense pressure on hydrocarbon, metals and fertilizer companies.

“The consequences of the conflict in the Middle East are still difficult to accurately predict,” Putin tells business leaders in Moscow.

“It seems to me that those who are involved in the conflict cannot predict anything themselves, but for us it is even more difficult.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel continues to strike Iran “with full force,” in a brief video message touting Israel’s assassination yesterday of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy chief, Alireza Tangsiri.

“We are continuing to strike, with full force, targets of the Iranian terror regime,” the premier says.

“Last night, we eliminated the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ navy. This individual has a great deal of blood on his hands, and he was also responsible for leading the closure of the Strait of Hormuz,” Netanyahu continues.

He calls this “yet another example of the cooperation between us and our ally, the United States, in pursuit of our shared war objectives.”

No injuries reported in Iran’s 7th missile salvo of the day; forces heading to impact site

No injuries are reported following Iran’s latest ballistic missile attack, the seventh salvo since this morning.

A small number of missiles were launched in the attack, which triggered sirens across central Israel and on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The IDF says some of the missiles were successfully intercepted by air defenses.

Rescue forces are responding to reports of an impact in central Israel, possibly caused by falling fragments.

Pakistan says ‘US-Iran indirect talks are taking place,’ in first on-record confirmation

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirms that indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran are being held to end their war, using Islamabad as an intermediary.

Dar, who is also deputy prime minister, describes speculation about “peace talks” as “unnecessary,” adding: “In reality, US-Iran indirect talks are taking place through messages being relayed by Pakistan.”

“In this context, the United States has shared 15 points, being deliberated upon by Iran. Brotherly countries of Turkiye and Egypt, among others, are also extending their support to this initiative,” he writes on X, using Turkey’s official name.

Dar’s comments are the first on-the-record confirmation from Islamabad that Pakistan is playing a facilitating role.

Two senior officials told AFP yesterday that the US plan had been “conveyed to Iran via Pakistan,” but spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Islamabad has been touted as a go-between given its longstanding ties with both neighboring Iran and the United States, as well as its network of regional contacts.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Dar have both been in regular contact with senior Iranian government officials, as well as their Gulf allies, notably Saudi Arabia.

The powerful head of the Pakistan army, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has equally been involved in the diplomatic efforts, and spoke to US President Donald Trump last Sunday, officials said.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has denied any “negotiations” with the administration in Washington but conceded that messages were being exchanged through “friendly countries.”

“At present, our policy is the continuation of resistance,” he said on state television last night. “We do not intend to negotiate — so far, no negotiations have taken place.”

Gulf council says members want to be involved in any Iran war talks

Gulf countries say they want to be involved in any talks between the United States and Iran, insisting that while they have a right to self-defense, they prefer diplomacy.

“We emphasize the necessity of involving the GCC countries in any talks or agreements to resolve this crisis, in a way that contributes to strengthening their security and stability,” Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Jasem AlBudaiwi says in a televised speech.

AlBudaiwi also says Iran has been asking vessels to pay sums of money to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

US preparing ‘final blow’ options that could see use of ground troops if Iran talks fail — report

The US is working on options for a “final blow” to Iran that could see American ground troops deployed on Iranian soil, as well as a major bombing effort, Axios reports, citing two US officials and two sources with knowledge.

If attempts to initiate high-level negotiations with Iran do not bear fruit and the Iranians continue to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the US could initiate a final blow that would serve a dual purpose — improving its position in future talks with Tehran, or allowing US President Donald Trump to end the war unilaterally with a victory image.

The officials tell Axios that four options are under discussion.

The first would entail seizing or blockading Kharg Island, Iran’s key hub for the export of oil.

A second option would be to take Larak Island in the strait, which has Iranian bases and radars that track ships transiting Hormuz, as well as smaller boats that can attack civilian ships.

A third possibility would be to invade Abu Musa Island in the eastern Persian Gulf, which gives Iran control over ships leaving the Gulf. The island — and the nearby Greater and Lesser Tunb islands — are held by Iran but claimed by the United Arab Emirates, a key US and Israeli ally.

Finally, the US could simply block or take control of ships exporting Iranian oil.

According to Axios, there are also plans under consideration for US troops to seize Iran’s highly enriched uranium, believed to sit under ruined nuclear facilities deep inside Iran. Alternatively, the US could simply bomb the sites from the air to ensure that Iran can’t reach the material.

Trump has not decided on any of the plans, say the sources.

British police say that two men arrested in connection with an arson attack that destroyed four ambulances owned by a Jewish charity have been released on bail as they continue to investigate the suspected antisemitic hate crime.

The two British nationals, aged 45 and 47, were detained yesterday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, London’s Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement. The men are released under strict bail conditions and will be closely monitored, police say.

Authorities yesterday described the arrests as an important breakthrough in the case, but noted that three people were visible in the closed-circuit camera footage of the attack.

“We continue to work to try and identify all of those involved in this appalling attack and the investigation team is working around the clock to do this,’’ said Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London.

Police are investigating a claim of responsibility by a group with potential links to Iran, but have not declared the matter to be a terror attack.

The blaze early on Monday morning in Golders Green, a London neighborhood with a large Jewish population, destroyed four ambulances belonging to the volunteer organization Hatzola Northwest, which provides emergency care to residents of the area. Oxygen cylinders in the vehicles exploded, breaking windows in an adjacent apartment block.

Trump says Iran must ‘get serious soon’ if it wants to salvage talks

US President Donald Trump says Iranian negotiators are “begging” for a deal after what he describes as having been “militarily obliterated,” rejecting Tehran’s public stance that it is only reviewing Washington’s proposal.

“The Iranian negotiators are very different and “strange,” he writes.

“They better get serious soon, before it is too late, because once that happens, there is NO TURNING BACK, and it won’t be pretty,” he says in a Truth Social post.

Trump: US ‘needs nothing from NATO,’ which has done nothing to help fight Iran

US President Donald Trump attacks the NATO military alliance, saying its member states “have done absolutely nothing to help with the lunatic nation [of Iran], now militarily decimated.”

Writing in all caps on his Truth Social account in the early morning Washington time, Trump says the US “needs nothing from NATO, but ‘never forget’ this very important point in time!”

Trump has raged at NATO throughout the war. Last week, he wrote, “Without the USA., NATO IS A PAPER TIGER! They didn’t want to join the fight to stop a Nuclear Powered Iran. Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them.”

According to reports, some NATO countries, like the UK and French, are discussing plans to lead a “Hormuz coalition” to open the key shipping lane. Other NATO countries have expressed an openness to join as well. Estonia’s foreign minister told The Times of Israel last week that his country is “very much open to discuss with the US” joining a military mission to open the strait.

Iran fortifying Kharg Island amid fears of possible US ground op — report

(European Space Agency/AFP)

Iran is increasing military defenses on Kharg Island in anticipation of a possible US operation to seize the territory, sources familiar with US intelligence reporting tell CNN.

Tehran has been laying traps, moving military personnel and boosting air defenses amid fears of an American plan to take control of the island, which handles about 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, according to the report.

Previous reports have indicated that US President Donald Trump is weighing such an operation in a bid to gain enough leverage over Iran to coerce it into reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

US officials and military experts have warned of significant casualty risks, saying the island is heavily fortified with layered defenses and that Iran had recently reinforced it with additional shoulder-fired, surface-to-air guided missile systems known as MANPADS, sources tell CNN.

The report comes as the Trump administration says it has made progress with Iran on a 15-point US ceasefire plan, though Tehran has publicly reacted coldly to the negotiations.

Regardless of the talks’ progress, the US has deployed 1,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division and 5,000 Marines toward the Gulf, with the Marines traveling on the USS Tripoli, an assault ship that could play a key role in a potential attack on Kharg, according to an NBC report.

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned yesterday that Iran was preparing for such an assault, writing on X that “based on some intelligence reports, Iran’s enemies are preparing to occupy one of the Iranian islands with support from one of the regional states.

“Our forces are monitoring all enemy movements, and if they take any step, all the vital infrastructure of that regional state will be targeted with relentless, unceasing attacks,” he said.

Trump has not publicly ruled out the option of taking Kharg, a move he advocated for during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. Trump told The Guardian in a 1988 interview that should he ever become US president, “I’d be harsh on Iran. They’ve been beating us psychologically, making us look like a bunch of fools. One bullet shot at one of our men or ships and I’d do a number on Kharg Island. I’d go in and take it.”

Defense Minister Israel Katz says the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, Alireza Tangsiri, was killed in an Israeli strike.

“The IDF eliminated the commander of the IRGC Navy, the person directly responsible for the terror operation of mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic,” Katz says during an assessment this morning with military officials.

Katz says the strike is a “message” to the IRGC: “The IDF will hunt you down and eliminate you one by one.”

“We will continue to operate in Iran with full force to achieve the objectives of the war,” he adds.

Tangsiri was targeted in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas while meeting with senior commanders of the IRGC Navy, according to Israeli officials.

US embassy tells citizens to leave Iraq amid attacks from Iran-backed militias

Iran-backed militias in Iraq are launching attacks on US citizens and US-associated targets in the country, the American embassy in Baghdad says.

The embassy advises US citizens to leave Iraq immediately, and to avoid the embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Erbil “due to ongoing risks from rockets and drones in Iraqi airspace.”

The attacks come after a series of deadly airstrikes this week that killed fighters from the Popular Mobilization Force, a coalition of pro-Iranian militias that is part of the Iraqi military. The PMF blames the strikes on the US.

The PMF was formed of Shiite pro-Iran militias over a decade ago as Iraq waged war against the Islamic State terror group. Among PMF’s members is Kataeb Hezbollah, a powerful US-designated terror group.

Iran’s parliament is working on a bill to formalize the fees it is reportedly charging on some ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, local media reports.

The Fars and Tasnim news agencies, both close to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, quote lawmaker Mohammadreza Rezaei Kouchi as saying that “parliament is pursuing a plan to formally codify Iran’s sovereignty, control and oversight over the Strait of Hormuz, while also creating a source of revenue through the collection of fees.”

“This is entirely natural, just as goods pay transit fees when passing through other corridors, the Strait of Hormuz is also a corridor,” he reportedly says. “We provide its security, and it is natural that ships and oil tankers should pay such fees.”

The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, is considered an international waterway open to all shipping. Imposing fees would end that and likely be strongly opposed by the Gulf Arab states, the United States and others.

Emirati oil executive calls Iran’s chokehold on Strait of Hormuz ‘economic terrorism’

Emirati oil executive Sultan al-Jaber, who leads the massive state-run Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., hardens the United Arab Emirates’ rhetoric as the war nears its one-month mark.

“Weaponizing the Strait of Hormuz is not an act of aggression against one nation,” al-Jaber says in a speech for an event hosted by the Middle East Institute in Washington.

“It is economic terrorism against every consumer, every family that depends on affordable energy and food. When Iran holds Hormuz hostage, every nation pays the ransom, at the gas pump, at the grocery store and at the pharmacy. No country can be allowed to destabilize the global economy in this way. Not now. Not ever.”

Iran is running a “de facto ‘toll booth’ regime” in the Strait of Hormuz, controlling which ships come through and getting payment for their safe passage, a leading shipping intelligence firm says.

Lloyd’s List Intelligence publishes an analysis highlighting Iran’s practices through the strait.

It described vessels having to provide manifests, crew details and their destination to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

The information goes to the Guard’s “Hormozgan Provincial Command for sanctions screening, cargo alignment checks that currently prioritizes oil over all other commodities, and for what is described as ‘geopolitical vetting,’” Lloyd’s List says.

“While not all ships are paying a direct toll, at least two vessels have and the payment is settled in yuan,” Lloyd’s List says, referring to China’s national currency.

Such payments likely would run afoul of American and European sanctions on the Guard, a key power center within Iran that controls its ballistic missile arsenal and was key in suppressing nationwide protests in January.

Iran has not directly explained the process for ships to go through the strait, though a Foreign Ministry spokesperson has appeared to acknowledge Tehran is receiving payments for some ships in an interview.

In recent days, Israeli strikes have largely focused on Iran’s military production industries.

Russia began delivering drones to Iran this month and is set to complete the phased shipment of the equipment by the end of the month, the Financial Times reports, citing Western intelligence assessments.

Russia is also reportedly sending food and medicine to Iran.

The Kremlin has already provided intelligence support and satellite imagery to its ally, the report said, but the drones are the first weapons shipment from Moscow to Tehran during this war, which began on February 28.

A Kremlin spokesperson said in response to the report that ““There are a lot of fakes going around right now. One thing is true — we are continuing our dialogue with the Iranian leadership,” according to FT.

Russia has been manufacturing Iranian-designed drones for its war in Ukraine since 2023, the report said. The shipment from Russia to Iran is reportedly meant to bolster Tehran’s military capabilities and stabilize its regime.

Israel’s recent strikes on Iranian targets at the Caspian Sea reportedly were meant to disrupt transfers between Russia and Iran.

Woman moderately injured running to shelter amid rocket attack from Lebanon — MDA

A woman was moderately wounded when she received a head injury while running to a bomb shelter during tonight’s Hezbollah rocket attack from Lebanon on central Israel, Magen David Adom says.

She has been taken to Sheba Medical Center for treatment, the ambulance service says. Two others were lightly injured in a car accident at the time the siren sounded warning of the attack.

MDA adds that no one has been reported injured directly from the attack. Missile fragments were found in two locations.

In reversal, UK police say they’ll return to arresting supporters of Palestine Action

The UK’s Metropolitan Police announces that it will return to arresting anyone who expresses support for the Palestine Action group, after softening that policy when a ban on the group was struck down in court.

An interim policy put in place last month said that “officers would identify and gather evidence of offenses,” but “arrests would be unlikely,” according to a statement from the department.

But the ban that was struck down is the subject of an ongoing court battle, and the police, who are responsible for Greater London, say they will now return to arresting the group’s supporters.

Because the ruling is under appeal, “That means it is still a criminal offense to support Palestine Action,” Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman says in a statement. “We must enforce the law as it is at the time, not as it might be at a future date. We must do that consistently and without fear or favor.”

He added, “We have determined that while Palestine Action remains proscribed and support for it remains unlawful under the Terrorism Act, we must continue to enforce the law and this is likely to involve the arrest of those committing offenses.”

The protest group was banned last year, after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base and damaged two planes. The ban was struck down in February by the British High Court, a decision the UK government later said it would appeal.

US President Donald Trump insists that Iran has been negotiating with his administration in recent days, despite officials familiar with the matter clarifying that the engagement has been limited to a passing along of messages through mediators.

“They want to make a deal so badly, but they’re afraid to say it, because they figure they’ll be killed by their own people. They’re also afraid they’ll be killed by us,” Trump says in remarks at a Republican fundraising event.

Australia bans visitors from Iran, saying the war in the Middle East increases the risk they will refuse to fly home once their short-term visas expire.

For the next six months, people travelling on Iranian passports will be barred from visiting Australia for tourism or work, the Home Affairs department says.

“The conflict in Iran has increased the risk that some temporary visa holders may be unable or unlikely to depart Australia when their visas expire,” it says in a statement.

Some exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis, the department adds, such as for the parents of Australian citizens.

More than 85,000 Australian residents were born in Iran, according to government figures, with vibrant diaspora communities found in major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne.

Australia angered Iran this month when it granted asylum to seven players and officials from the visiting women’s football team.

The players were branded “traitors” at home after refusing to sing the national anthem before an Asian Cup match — a gesture seen as an act of defiance against the Islamic Republic.

Five of those seven later reversed their decisions to seek sanctuary in Australia, fuelling suspicions their families had come under threat.

The head of Uganda’s military suggests that his country will join the Iran war if Israel is at risk of defeat.

“We want the war in the Middle East to end now. The world is tired of it. But any talk of destroying or defeating Israel will bring us into the war. On the side of Israel!” Muhoozi Kainerugaba tweets.

Last month, Kainerugaba announced that Uganda would erect a statue of Yoni Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s brother, who was killed leading an elite IDF force in the 1976 rescue of hostages from Entebbe.
