Bill banning Breaking the Silence from schools clears initial hurdle
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleThe Knesset has given a preliminary okay to a controversial bill banning left-wing NGO Breaking the Silence from speaking in schools.
Following a stormy debate in the plenum, the measure passes 51-17.
Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who championed the move, says before the vote that the group, which collects and disseminates testimony of wrongdoing from IDF veterans, is actively working to hurt the country.
“Breaking the Silence doesn’t only want to poison the world against us, but to poison our children with their lying reports,” he says.
The bill must still pass three more readings in the Knesset before becoming law.
