EU’s von der Leyen welcomes progress in US-Iran talks, says Tehran must not have nuclear weapon

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomes signs of progress in talks over a possible peace deal between the United States and Iran.
“I welcome the progress towards an agreement between the US and Iran. We need a deal that truly de-escalates the conflict, reopens the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees toll-free full freedom of navigation. Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” von der Leyen writes on X.
US President Donald Trump said earlier that Washington and Iran have “largely negotiated” a memorandum of understanding.
