Gulf nations have arrested more than 100 Shiites and accused them of treason, The New York Times reports, after the countries came under heavy attack from the Shiite-led Iran during the recent war.
Those arrested are accused of loyalty to Iran, according to the report. The arrests have taken place in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain, it says.
The cases are generally opaque, the report says, with trials mostly closed to press and counterterrorism laws often covering political dissent.
Among the arrests, Kuwait has said it nabbed three cells of the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group, including one seeking to assassinate Kuwait’s leaders, the report says.
Dozens more Shiite suspects have been arrested in Bahrain and the UAE, says the Times.
