May, Leadsom in final round to be Britain’s next PM
Home Secretary Theresa May and Minister Andrea Leadsom are the last two in the contest for Britain’s next prime minister, an official says.
Michael Gove, the fervently pro-Brexit justice secretary, is knocked out in today’s voting, winning just 46 votes from Conservative MPs. May pulls in 199 votes, putting her in the lead and solidifying her place as favorite, and Leadsom gets 84 votes.
Whichever candidate wins, Britain is on course to have its first woman prime minister since Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher stepped down in 1990.
