Palestinian Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Ahmed Hussein says he cannot comment on the US-brokered plan to install video surveillance at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the third-holiest site in Islam.
The Temple Mount is also considered by Jews to be the holiest site in Judaism and home to the biblical Jewish Temples.
“It is still a plan, the Waqf will decide in the end,” he says in an interview with Channel 2.
He adds that the Jews have no right to ascend to the Temple Mount, as, he claimed, the site was always home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
“The Al-Aqsa Mosque existed since 3,000 years ago… and 30,000 years ago and since the creation of the world,” the mufti says.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
