WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump says Saudi Arabia will be sent US-made F-35 fighter jets “very quickly.”
Addressing the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, Trump says the US is selling top-notch military equipment to Saudi Arabia, including 300 tanks and “airplanes,” an apparent reference to the F-35s.
“We’re working on getting that approved very quickly. It’s already approved, don’t worry,” Trump quips. “We have to go through a process… the process will take 24 hours, so you’re in good shape.”
Israel had reportedly hoped that the US would condition the F-35 sale on Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords, but Saudi Arabia is conditioning normalization with Jerusalem on the latter establishing a pathway to Palestinian statehood — something Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to do.
Trump appeared to dismiss concerns that the F-35 sale would harm Israel’s military advantage, saying both countries deserve top-notch equipment as they are both great allies of the US.
