Shaked killing hope for peace, UN envoy charges

The UN’s special coordinator for the Middle East peace process on Wednesday says Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked is “killing hope” for a settlement with the Palestinians.

Nikolay Mladenov speaks after Shaked on Tuesday declared the party would never support a two-state solution.

“The determination of some ministers in Israel to block progress and kill hope by promoting illegal settlements and rejecting a Palestinian state is concerning,” he says in a statement to AFP.

On Tuesday, Shaked responded to peace overtures by Netanyahu and new Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman by saying there would be no Palestinian state while Jewish Home was in government.

“As long as we are in the government, there will be no Palestinian state, there will be no settlement evacuations and we will not give any land to our enemies,” she said.

Mladenov says the comments are particularly concerning as they came “a day after encouraging signs by the prime minister.”
