Syrian media reports IDF shelling in buffer zone, incursions into two towns

Syrian media reports that the Israeli military fired artillery shells near a village in Israel’s buffer zone in southern Syria, and conducted incursions into two other towns, located about a kilometer (0.6 miles) from the border with Israel, this morning.

The IDF has been deployed to nine army posts inside southern Syria since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. The posts are mostly within a UN-patrolled buffer zone on the border between the countries.

Syria’s state-run SANA news agency says four artillery shells hit agricultural land near the village of Trinjeh, in the Quneitra area, “without causing injuries or material damage.‎”

In addition, Israeli forces operated in the villages of Ma’ariya and al-Aridah, in the southern portion of the border, and established a military checkpoint in the area, SANA reports.

Such incidents have been commonplace in Syria in the past year and a half. IDF troops have been operating in areas up to around 15 kilometers (some nine miles) deep into Syria, aiming to defend the border and capture weapons that Israel says could pose a threat to the country if they fall into the hands of “hostile forces.”
