US President Donald Trump says the leaders of Israel and Lebanon will speak on Thursday.
“Trying to get a little breathing room between Israel and Lebanon. It has been a long time since the two leaders have spoken, like 34 years. It will happen tomorrow. Nice!” Trump writes on Truth Social.
He doesn’t specify which leaders will be speaking — whether it’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun or Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Before trilateral talks were hosted by the US this week, Israel and Lebanon last held negotiations in 1993, but those were not at the leader level.
Lebanon would likely demand a ceasefire before agreeing to hold such high-level engagement with Israel, but Jerusalem has to date been holding out on agreeing to one, as it seeks to continue degrading Hezbollah.
The security cabinet discussed a potential Lebanon ceasefire during a meeting last night, but the session reportedly ended without a decision.
