Ultra-Orthodox protesters target Jerusalem cafe for opening on Shabbat

Ultra-Orthodox protesters harass customers at a newly opened Jerusalem cafe for operating on Shabbat, footage circulating online shows.

Dozens of Haredi demonstrators gathered outside Cafe Basimta on four separate occasions throughout the day, according to Haaretz. The cafe’s owner, Yoel Ben David, tells the news outlet that some protesters overturned tables.

Secular customers and local residents reportedly arrived to drive the demonstrators away.

“I’m from Jerusalem, and I’m tired of not having enough places open on Shabbat. That’s why we decided to open,” Ben David tells Haaretz. “I feel like it will happen again next week, and we will prepare for that.”
