UN chief fires South Sudan peacekeeper force commander
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleUN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon fired the commander of the peacekeeping force in South Sudan following a damning report showing that the blue helmets failed to protect civilians during a recent outbreak of violence in Juba.
Ban “has asked for the immediate replacement of the force commander,” says UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
A UN inquiry finds that a lack of leadership in the UN peacekeeping mission culminated in a “chaotic and ineffective response” to an outbreak of violence.
The investigation set up by Ban found that peacekeepers maintained a “risk-averse posture” during the heavy fighting in the capital from July 8 to 11.
