A senior US official tells the UN Security Council that Israel informed Washington ahead of time that the strikes it launched earlier today against Iran were “necessary for its self-defense.”

“Every sovereign nation has the right to defend itself and Israel is no exception,” senior State Department official McCoy Pitt says during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the conflict between Israel and Iran.

McCoy reiterates a warning issued earlier by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who said Washington wasn’t involved in the Israeli strike and that the consequences against Tehran would be dire if the Islamic Republic retaliates against US interests or personnel.

“President Trump was elected with a sweeping mandate from the American people: to advance peace and to avoid the grave mistakes of past administrations that led to forever wars,” McCoy continues. “The United States will continue to seek a diplomatic resolution that ensures Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon or pose a threat to stability in the Middle East.”

The United States will continue to seek a diplomatic resolution that ensures Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon or pose a threat to stability in the Middle East. Iran’s leadership would be wise to negotiate at this time,” he adds.
