A 49-year-old man died Monday when he drowned while rescuing his daughter in northern Israel, medics said.

Hebrew media reports said Israel Prisons Service officer Hani Abu-Rish, a resident of the Druze village of Kfar Yarka in the north, went into the water to try and save his daughter at a beach in Rosh Hanikra.

He managed to get her out of the water before he was swept away. The girl was in a good condition.

Magen David Adom medics said the victim was pulled unconscious from the water. He was rushed to the nearby Galilee Medical Center, where doctors declared him dead.

Abu-Rish is survived by a wife and six children, the Prisons Service said.

His cousin, Wasim Abu-Rish, also a Prisons Service officer, died in the 2010 Carmel fire disaster.

Reports said Abu-Rish and his family were at the beach celebrating the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
