A man died of smoke inhalation Thursday following an apartment fire in the central town of Kiryat Ekron.

Paramedics alerted to the blaze on the first floor of a building on Herzl Street found the soot-covered man, in his 70s, unconscious and without vital signs.

They rushed him to Kaplan Medical Center while trying to resuscitate him.

Doctors later pronounced the man’s death.

Also Thursday, Israel Fire and Rescue Services said it saved a woman from a fire in an apartment in Beit Shemesh. The service said the woman was unable to exit the building and as a result was in life-threatening danger.

Firefighters extinguished the flames and extricated the woman safely from the premises.
