A man was shot dead in Jaffa overnight and another was injured by the gunfire, the Israel Police said Monday morning.

The victim, 21, was a resident of the central city of Holon. The second person, 19, a resident of Jaffa, was lightly injured by the gunfire on Pahad Yitshak Street in the southern Tel Aviv suburb.

Both men were taken to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon.

Magen David Adom medics said that when they arrived at the scene they found one of the men lying on the ground with no vital signs. Medics tried to resuscitate him and rushed him to the hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.

Large numbers of police converged on the area and began collecting evidence. Police said the shooting was not a terror-related incident but linked to crime feuds.

The incident came hours after a suspected bomb attack destroyed the car of a former mayor of Bat Yam as he was driving through Tel Aviv, in an incident that police also said was tied to the criminal underworld. Shlomo Lahiani was lightly injured, as was another man in an adjacent vehicle.

Two weeks ago, a 25-year-old man was shot dead in Jaffa, also due to violent crime.

A wave of gangland shooting and killings has swept the country in recent years with police seemingly unable to curb the phenomenon. Many of the victims have been members of the Arab community.
