Three men in their 20s were shot, one of them fatally, in the northern Arab town of Fureidis, Israeli Police said Wednesday.

The man who was killed was identified as 25-year-old Saleh Elika, a resident of the city.

The other two men were taken to Hadera’s Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in moderate conditions.

Police launched an investigation.

According to the Abraham Initiatives non-profit, Elika’s killing marks the 20th Arab to die in Israel under violent or criminal circumstances this year. Of the total, 13 were killed by gunfire.

Among those killed were three women. Just over half of the deaths, 11, were people under the age of 30, according to the Initiatives which campaigns against violence in the Arab community.

Arab Israelis blame police, who they say have failed to crack down on powerful criminal organizations and largely ignore the violence, which includes family feuds, mafia turf wars and violence against women.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Public Security Minister Omer Barlev have vowed to crack down on the violence, as well as on illegal weapons.

In February, police reported a 37 percent drop in shooting incidents in Arab Israeli communities so far this year, as the police ramped up activity.
