Police on Sunday launched a search in southern Israel after receiving a report that a soldier’s rifle was stolen at gunpoint.

Following the incident, which happened at the Beit Kama junction north of Beersheba, police set up roadblocks in the area and called in a helicopter to help with the search.

The soldier told police he was at the junction when four people got out of a car and threatened him with a pistol, before taking the gun and fleeing the scene.

A car was later found flipped over near Beit Kama and police are reportedly checking if it belonged to the thieves.

Police told residents to expect traffic delays in the area as a result of the operation.
