Soldier seriously injured by APC in training accident in south

A cadet in a Combat Engineering Corps officers’ training course was seriously injured in an apparent training accident in southern Israel on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces said.

According to the IDF’s initial probe, the cadet was crushed by the door of a “Namer” armored personnel carrier (APC) at the Tzeelim training base while preparing for a routine exercise. He was struck in the head and chest by the heavy door, according to the preliminary investigation.

The IDF said the soldier was taken to the Soroka hospital in Beersheba for treatment, and his family had been notified of his injury.

The incident was being investigated, the IDF added.

The military did not immediately permit publication of the incident until the soldier’s family had been notified.

In another incident Sunday, one soldier was moderately injured and 18 others were lightly hurt in a bus crash in southern Israel, along with the bus driver, the military and medics said.

The crash between the bus and a truck occurred at the Tlalim junction on the Route 40 highway. The 39 soldiers on the bus were being taken to an army base further south.

They were all also taken to Soroka hospital for treatment. The IDF said their families had been notified.
