A man and a woman in their 20s were killed and two other people were seriously injured when their vehicle collided with a bus near Ramat Gan in central Israel on Tuesday night, medics said.

The accident occurred on Route 4 near the Mesuvim Junction when the car, a Mercedes, hit the rear of the bus. Two of the passengers were trapped in the vehicle and later declared dead at the scene by Magen David Adom medics.

Two other passengers of the car were evacuated to the nearby Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer: a man, in critical condition after being resuscitated at the scene, and a woman who had a serious head injury.

Several passengers on the bus were lightly hurt and treated on site.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear and police said they had opened an investigation.
