A young man was killed Friday after being hit by a train at the Kiryat Motzkin station in northern Israel.

Israel Railways officials said the man had apparently been hit after walking onto the track for reasons that were not immediately clear.

The man, in his twenties, was crushed beneath the vehicle and a firefighting team rushed to the scene to help remove him, while medics attempted to keep him alive. The victim was rushed to Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center where doctors declared him dead.

The incident led to delays in trains’ schedules in the area, and buses were called to shuttle passengers from several stations in the north.
