Israel Defense Forces soldiers detained a 15-year-old Syrian boy on Thursday, after he was caught attempting to cross the border into Israel.

The boy had been bitten by a service dog from the army’s Oketz canine unit along the border, and he was taken to Ziv Hospital in Safed for treatment.

The reasons for the attempted crossing are under investigation. It was unclear initially whether the teen was a refugee, fleeing from the ongoing fighting between the Bashar Assad regime and Syrian rebels.

Anti-regime activists estimate that over 36,000 Syrians have died since the outbreak of the civil war in March  2011. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled to neighboring countries due to the fighting.
