An art festival on the seam of Jerusalem’s East and West

If you’re in Jerusalem for this week’s International Writer’s Festival or Jerusalem Design Week, stick around for MusraraMix 16, an alternative art festival organized by the Musrara Naggar School of Art in the city’s neighborhood of the same name.
Held during the evenings of Tuesday, May 24 through Thursday, May 26, the annual festival always takes place in Musrara, a hidden treasure of a neighborhood that straddles the seam line between East and West Jerusalem.
Organized by the art school, local and visiting international artists were sent into the lab in order to work with living materials and experiment with natural science. The concept of this year’s MusraraMix 16 is “art-sistence,” where existence and artistic practice meet.
The results of that artistic experimentation will be shown throughout the neighborhood, in people’s homes and yards, in the cobblestoned courtyards and leafy byways of this quirky Jerusalem quarter.

According to Sharon Hodi, the curator of this year’s MusraraMix, the festival requires very subtle work, curating in a space “that’s a living space, not a kind of white box, but part of the neighborhood, and suddenly this kind of magic happens.”
