The man who planted a bomb on an Israeli Embassy car in New Delhi on Monday may have been a local gun for hire, Indian media reported Wednesday, citing investigators.
Indian news site NDTV reported the bomber is thought to have conducted several dry runs before attaching a bomb to the car of embassy staffer Tal Yehoshua Koren, the wife of Israel’s defense attache in India.
Investigators believe the bomber intended to hit any embassy staffer and did not target Yehoshua Koren.
A report in India Today earlier in the day revealed that five individuals were held for questioning in connection with the bombing, after video footage revealed suspicious figures loitering around the vehicle before the attack.
New Delhi police have also discerned an image of the alleged bomber’s face, and in south Delhi, a red motorcycle similar to the one used in the attack was found abandoned.
In a separate article, it was reported that Delhi police were reviewing international phone calls made to the Middle East and Persian Gulf region in the hours before the attack. Of particular interest were several calls made from the market area, where the embassy vehicle was parked before it was bombed.
Channel 10 reported late Tuesday evening that Israeli specialists working for the Mossad were taking part in the investigation. According to the report, four experts were in New Delhi working with local authorities.
