Kuwait fishmonger fakes fresh fish with googly eyes

A fishmonger in Kuwait has reportedly been closed down by the authorities after he was caught gluing googly eyes onto fish to make them seem fresher.

A woman posted a video on Facebook on Friday of her washing the fish and removing the eye, which soon went viral.

Whether anyone was seriously fooled by a fish that looked part Muppet is unknown.

Local newspaper Al-Bayan reported that following the video the store had been identified and the Commerce Ministry shut it down.

Social media users were quick to make fun of the attempted hoax.

“Storeman: Sir our fish aren’t selling and they’re looking kinda old, like grey in the eyes..

Boss: Googley eyes. Stick those bright bastards onto the fish. The public won’t suspect shit *fires up cigar,*” wrote one Twitter user.

Someone else tweeted, “This story reminds me, my relatives have been here for 3 days! Time to go!”

Perhaps the funniest tweet also contained the oldest joke:
