Ex-Mossad agent is first Sephardi Jew to claim Spanish nationality
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleAvner Azulay, a former agent for the Mossad spy service, becomes the first Sephardi Jew to take Spanish nationality under a new law that seeks to repair the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
The law, passed by Madrid in 2014, offers the citizenship to descendants of the Jews who were expelled to “compensate for shameful events in the country’s past.”
Azulay assumes his new nationality by swearing allegiance to King Felipe VI of Spain at a ceremony near Tel Aviv, the Times of London reports.
Some 4,300 Sephardi Jews are granted Spanish nationality under the new law.
