US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has spoken with Defense Minister Benny Gantz on the phone, the Defense Ministry says.

Gantz “expressed his appreciation… for the American administration’s support of Israel’s right to self-defense and thanked him for the condolences conveyed to Israeli families who have lost loved ones to Hamas’ rocket fire,” the statement says.

Gantz also “detailed the significant military objectives that have been achieved over the past few days” and adds the operation will continue with the aim of achieving “long-term quiet.”

“Israel will continue to act responsibly, both in terms of its security and foreign policy,” Gantz tells Austin.
