Irish president: Rising anti-Semitism ‘unacceptable’

Irish President Michael Higgins tells a gathering of Jewish leaders and diplomats in Dublin that rising anti-Semitism, requiring armed police to guard Jewish schools and synagogues throughout Europe, is “not acceptable.”

During the gathering, assembled by the World Jewish Congress, Higgins also voices concern over emigration by Irish Jews.

“Today, Ireland’s Jewish community is getting smaller,” he says, according to a press release Tuesday from the WJC. “Many of the younger generation of Irish Jews have gone to live their lives overseas. To uncover the reasons which led so many of them to leave this island would probably teach us much about ourselves as a society.”
