The Lebanese government is working to prevent a Hezbollah response against Israel that could escalate into a wider war, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib says during a press conference with his Egyptian counterpart.
“When Israeli strikes hit Lebanon alone, we consulted with Hezbollah to find a response that would not lead to a war,” Bou Habib says, referencing the recent Israeli attack on Beirut that killed top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr.
“But today, Israeli strikes have expanded to Iraq and against Palestinians in Tehran,” he adds, although there are no reports of Israeli forces targeting Iraq. “The decision has a greater scope than Lebanon. But we are working to prevent any reaction that would lead to a wider war.”
