Mossad chief meets Syrian FM in effort to defuse tensions after IDF’s airbase strike — report

Mossad chief Roman Gofman and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani held a meeting today to defuse tensions between their countries after Israel’s recent strike on a Syrian airbase, two sources with knowledge of the matter tell Axios.

The report does not mention the location of the meeting.

The strike, which Jerusalem said it carried out after Damascus failed to heed Israeli warnings against the potential deployment of Turkish troops at the airbase, has dramatically escalated tensions between the countries, and drew harsh criticism from Ankara and US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declines to comment to Axios on the meeting, and a spokesperson for al-Shaibani does not immediately respond to a request for comment from the outlet.
