State conversion program due to close because of budget shortfall
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleHadashot television news reports that the state’s most successful conversion program for non-Jewish family members of Jewish immigrants is due to close because of a shortage of funds.
According to the report, some NIS 20 million shekels are missing from the Nativ program’s annual budget, forcing the closure of the program in the coming days.
Some 1,500 soldiers are among the 2,500 students studying Judaism for months before applying for conversion in a rabbinic court.
The budget shortfall was caused by a massive growth in demand for the program, according to officials.
The Prime Minister’s Office, the ministry in charge of the program, says it is looking for funds to cover the budget shortfall.
