US, Israel only ‘no’ votes in Cuba embargo condemnation
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleThe US and Israel are the only two nations to vote against a UN General Assembly condemnation of the American trade embargo on Cuba. This is the 24th year that Washington votes against the resolution, despite warming ties and a push by President Barack Obama to remove the economic restrictions.
Today’s resolution is adopted by the 193-member General Assembly with 191 votes in favor. While such resolutions are non-binding, they can carry political weight.
In July, the United States and Cuba restored diplomatic relations after a 54-year break. The resolution welcomes the renewed ties and recognizes “the expressed will” of Obama to end the embargo.
