A man was shot and seriously injured in the northern city of Kiryat Ata on Monday evening under unclear circumstances.

The victim, a 30-year-old resident of Kiryat Motzkin, was riding his bike on Derech Yitzhak Rabin Street in Kiryat Ata, when a suspect who was apparently lying in ambush shot him several times at point-blank range before escaping in a car.

First responders found the victim unconscious with several abdominal gunshot wounds. He was evacuated to the Rambam hospital in Haifa while paramedics administered life-saving treatment.

Police initially believed the incident to be criminally motivated. However, an initial investigation found no evidence linking the victim, who works in a public company, to the underworld, raising the possibility of either a terror attack or a case of mistaken identity.

“We are looking into all possibilities and not ruling out a possible terror attack,” a police official told Channel 12. “The victim has no criminal record, which raises many questions regarding the motives behind the shooting.”

Police gathered forensic evidence from the scene and were trying to apprehend the shooter.
