Israelis have experienced plenty of tension after Iran fired 300 missiles and drones at Israel on April 13 and attacked again on October 1, six months later.
Most of the projectiles were intercepted during both attacks and Israel retaliated for both with airstrikes on Iran.
Now Israeli viewers can experience a different kind of tension with the first episode of the long-awaited season three of Kan 11’s blockbuster “Tehran,” as Mossad agent Tamar Rabinayan attempts to extract herself once again from Iran.
The long-delayed third season, currently being viewed on Israel’s Kan 11 before arriving on partner Apple TV+, first offers a quick review of where Rabinyan last left her audience.
At the end of season two, Milan, Rabinyan’s Iranian boyfriend, is killed by a car bomb planted in their escape car, and Marjan Montazuami, a local Mossad agent played by Glen Close, is poisoned to death by the wife of Faraz Kamali, the Iranian intelligence officer.
Spoiler alert
In season three, Rabinyan, as usual, is left trapped in Iran, with no one to trust, not even her employer, the Mossad, and is pursued simultaneously by the Israel spy agency and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
The young heroine must find a new way to regain Mossad’s support to survive.
It’s heady stuff, requiring some viewers to sit on the edge of the couch, clutching a pillow — and providing a much-needed break from the news — sort of.
The episode introduces in its latest edition, Eric Peterson, a nuclear supervisor played with haughty charm Hugh Laurie. In his first appearance, his British-accented characters leaves his loyalties intriguingly unclear.
Meanwhile, Mossad agent Rabinyan is running through the streets of Tehran attempting to hide, finding some cover in a women’s shelter.
She realizes with the help of an Israeli friend in the Mossad that she must find some relevant information to give to the Mossad in order to regain their trust.
The first episode ends as Rabinayan uncovers some new information about Iran’s nuclear race, and begins to figure out who she needs to help her survive and perhaps make her way out of Tehran.
The second episode of the third season of “Tehran” will drop on Kan 11 on Monday, December 16.
