Jenin has long been a center for terrorist activity. During the second intifida, it was the site of extensive battles between IDF and terrorist forces.

In May, former governor Kadura Musa died of a heart attack after gunmen opened fire on his home, leading to an extensive security crackdown, and in July, Fatah member Shami al-Shami was shot in the leg by unknown attackers but survived.

In April 2011 theater directer Juliano Mer-Khamis was killed by unknown gunmen.
