Palestinian killed by IDF fire near Hebron

A Palestinian man was killed by the IDF early Tuesday morning during clashes in a village south of Hebron in the West Bank, the Israeli military said.

According to the IDF, the incident occurred after the man attempted to board a military jeep, despite repeated warnings. The soldiers opened fire, killing the man.

The Palestinian was identified by the Palestinian Ma’an news agency as Muatazz Idreis Sharawnah, 19, a cadet at a Palestinian Authority military academy. He was treated at the scene and then taken to a Red Crescent hospital in Hebron, where he was pronounced dead.

Kamel Hamid, governor of Hebron district, said the man was shot and then hit by an Israeli jeep after throwing rocks at soldiers in the village of Dura.

The IDF said the incident began when Palestinians began throwing rocks at security forces in the village.

“They were instructed to step back, but the suspects continued with their violent behavior,” an IDF spokeswoman said. “Initial evidence suggest that one of the suspects attempted to climb on one of the vehicles… security forces warned the suspect, and after that they employed riot dispersal means, but finally responded with fire at only one of the suspects,” she continued.

She said the incident is under investigation.

Security forces remained in the area over fears that the death could cause further disturbances.
