A building in the southern border town of Sderot found a unique way of sending a message of unity for Independence Day by displaying Tuesday portraits of three pairs of siblings killed in recent terror attacks.

The building, located on HaRav Aba Sha’ul Street was adorned with banners showing brothers Yaakov Yisrael Paley, 5, and Asher Menahem Paley, 7, who were killed in a terror attack in Ramot in February along with Brothers Hallel Yaniv, 21, and Yagel Yaniv, 19, who were killed in a shooting attack the same month.  It also showed sisters Rina Dee and Maia Dee whoe were killed in an attack earlier this month. Their mother, Lucy Dee, was also killed.

In addition, the building featured photos of siblings Ma’ayan, 24, and Sahar, 17, Assor, who were killed earlier this month when their car was carried away by a flash flood in the south of the country

Each floor of the building had large photos of a pair of siblings displayed on the balconies. Images of the presentation were widely shared on social media.

Muriel Hazan from the building’s residence committee explained that each year the site is decorated for Independence Day “and this year we wanted to do something different.”

“Recently, there were many disasters involving brothers and sisters. That is unfortunate and rocks the country. But our message by displaying their photos is one of unity. We are all brothers in this country.”

With Israeli society deeply divided over the government’s planned radical overhaul of the judiciary, official ceremonies and events have carried an overall theme of unity.

According to the Srugim website, each year some residential buildings in Sderot compete for the most original Independence Day decorations.

Israel’s Independence Day began on Tuesday night with the conclusion of Memorial Day and continues until dusk on Wednesday.
