Shots fired at northern West Bank military post; no injuries

Palestinian gunmen fired a hail of bullets Monday night at a military post along the security barrier in the northern West Bank, the Border Police said.

According to police, slight damage was caused to a building inside the Salem base, close to the Arab Israeli town of the same name.

Border Police officers fired back at the gunmen, who fled toward the Jenin area.

Police said officers and Israel Defense Forces troops launched a manhunt for the suspects.

No officers or soldiers were hurt in the incident.

A video circulating online purported to show the moment the gunmen opened fire. Sounds of gunfire can be heard in the video.

The shooting came at a time of rising violence in the West Bank, particularly in the northern area, as Palestinian gunmen have repeatedly targeted military posts, troops operating along the West Bank security barrier, Israeli settlements and civilians on the roads.

Some of the attacks have been deadly. An Israeli soldier was killed in a shooting near Nablus on Tuesday, and another soldier was killed in a separate attack near Jerusalem several days before that.

Israeli forces have also ratcheted up arrest raids and counterterror efforts in the West Bank since a spate of terror attacks against Israelis in the spring killed 19 people.

More than 100 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli operations this year, many of them while carrying out attacks or during clashes with security forces.

In arrest raids in the West Bank early Monday, troops detained two wanted Palestinians, one in Nablus and one in Qarawat Bani Hassan.
