Suspicious envelope sent to French consulate in Haifa

Letter said postmarked in France prompts firefighters to close street to traffic as passersby complain of burning sensation in their eyes

An envelope containing suspected dangerous material arrived at the French consulate in the northern city of Haifa on Monday.

Several people near the consulate complained of a burning sensation in their eyes, according to reports.

Firefighting crews were on site dealing with the incident and the area had been closed to traffic.

The envelope was mailed in France,  the Ynet news site reported. The report said the package also contained goji berry seeds.

The consulate is in Hagefen Street.

No further details were known.
