Shipment of dried frogs and insects discovered after smell alerts customs officials

A shipment of seven containers of dried frogs, cockroaches, and other insects was discovered on Tuesday by customs officials in Haifa.

A strong smell emanating from the packages drew the attention of the officials, who were on a routine check of the Haifa central post office and initially were suspicious that the packages contained drugs.

The parcels were destined for several addresses in the north. The identity of the sender was still unknown, according to a Wednesday report in Israel Hayom.

Haifa Customs Authority head Yakov Yahav said, “The packages contained frogs, toads, cockroaches, a variety of dung beetles and dried insects that are prohibited for import. Each cockroach was 6 to 7 centimeters [2 to 3 inches] long and we believe they were meant for human consumption.”

Yahav noted that the creatures are considered a delicacy in some Far Eastern countries.
