TV show with rabbi, future pope claims Argentine Emmy
Local version of Israeli drama ‘In Treatment’ take prize for best miniseries, leading list of additional Jewish winners
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleBUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — A television program featuring a rabbi and the future Pope Francis was given a Martin Fierro Award, the Argentinian version of the Emmys.
Other winners of Argentine entertainment’s most prestigious awards, handed out Tuesday night at the Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires, included an Israeli program aired on National Public Television.
Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, and Rabbi Abraham Skorka, along with a Protestant minister, the Rev. Marcelo Figueroa, appeared on “Bible: A Valid Dialogue.”
Pope Francis aired a prerecorded message to his production team: “You worked so hard to deserve this prize, God bless you.”
The Israeli television series “B’Tipul,” or “In Treatment,” won in the miniseries category — the first time an Israeli show won a Fierro Award. The show, about the life of an Israeli psychologist, was created by an Israeli, Hagai Levy, and produced in Buenos Aires by an Argentine-Israeli, Yair Dori.
Other Fierro winners included local Jewish talent Diego Korol for his humor show “Sin Codificar,” or “Danger: No Coding”; Ernesto Korovsky and Silvina Fredjkes for Best Script; Dario Straschnoy for Best Advertising; Andy Kutznesoff for Best Radio FM program; and the Uruguayan actor Daniel Hendler for Best Actor.
Some 4 million viewers watched the ceremony on live television. It was the 43rd edition of the Fierro Awards.
