A foreign affairs reporter for the USA Today newspaper who called Haifa “home” died Friday evening in Washington, DC, after being knocked off his motorbike in a hit-and-run, the paper reported Saturday.

According to the newspaper, Oren Dorell was born in Canada in 1964 and lived in Bolivia and Philadelphia, “but considered his home to be Haifa, Israel, where he lived from ages 5 to 12.”

Dorell, 53, was hit while riding his motorbike in Washington, DC, by a suspected drunk driver who fled the scene.

Police later announced they had arrested 47-year-old Daryl Grant Alexander, who faced charges of second-degree murder, driving under the influence, and leaving after colliding.

“He was really full of life,” his wife Virginia “Ginny” Knapp Dorell said. “He wanted to do everything and experience everything.”
