A woman in Jerusalem’s Old City was attacked by a man with an axe in her home on Wednesday evening, police and medics said, with authorities probing the nature of the incident.

The suspect fled the scene immediately after carrying out the attack in the Jewish Quarter.

The victim, in her seventies, was rushed to Shaare Zedek hospital in moderate and stable condition after Magen David Adom medics found her fully conscious and with injuries in her upper body.

“Numerous police forces… were dispatched to the scene and are currently operating in the area to locate the suspect and investigate the circumstances of the incident,” police said.

The Jerusalem District police commander arrived at the scene and ordered widespread efforts to locate the assailant.
