Khamenei urges Muslims to resist US plot to destroy Islamic civilization

Iran’s supreme leader on Tuesday accused the United States of seeking to destroy Islamic civilization, and said that Obama administration officials who claim empathy for Islam are lying hypocrites, the semi-state Fars news agency reported.

The US-led plots must be met with “vigilance” and “resistance,” said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a fierce attack on America policies and attitudes.

Warning of an ostensible US plot to destroy millennia of Islamic civilization, Khamenei said Islam’s enemies sought to create “divisions among Muslims.”

Speaking to Muslim scholars, ambassadors and political figures at an international Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, Khamenei asserted: “The present US officials are against the principles of Islam.”

Reported Fars: “The Supreme Leader noted that the statements of the current US officials who claim to be in agreement with Islam are untrue and show their hypocrisy.” Despite their statements to the contrary, it quoted Khamenei saying, they are bent on “fomenting differences among Muslims.”

One example, of this, he said, was their “creating terrorist groups like Daesh (the Arabic name for Islamic State) and other groups that have been created through the funding of the US affiliates and their political aids; they (the American officials) have caused the recent tragedies in the Muslim world.”

Americans make no distinction between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, he said. “They are against any Muslim who wants to live in accordance with Islamic rules and makes efforts to that end.”

Despite America’s efforts, “the Islamic awakening cannot be destroyed and it will achieve its goals God willingly,” Khamenei pledged, according to Fars.

He urged Muslims to “resist” US efforts to foster division “and destroy the Muslim countries’ infrastructures as in Syria, Yemen and Libya. Muslims “should not remain silent and surrender to this plot. rather they should stand against these plots insightfully and by maintaining their resistance,” he said.

Khamenei spoke a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry hailed “important indications of significant progress towards Iran completing its key nuclear commitments,” following Russia’s announcement that key progress had been made toward removing enriched uranium stocks from the Islamic Republic.

In a written statement, Kerry described the nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action as “truly one of our most important accomplishments of 2015,” saying he “remains so proud of our team” that hammered out the agreement over the course of some 18 months.
