A 77-year-old man in the central city of Modiin stabbed and seriously wounded his wife, 74, as she slept early Monday, before apparently trying to kill himself, police and medics said.

After turning the knife on himself, the man then called for assistance, telling police “I’ve stabbed my wife,” the Ynet news site reported.

Magen David Adom medics found the woman conscious with multiple stab wounds and took her to Tel Hashomer Hospital near Tel Aviv in a serious condition.

She reportedly told police that she was woken by the stabbing.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear and police said the family had no history of violence.

The man had stab wounds in his upper body and was taken to the Assaf Harofeh hospital, close to Rishon Lezion.
