Dozens of Twitter accounts linked to supporters of the Islamic State terror group were hacked by the activist group known as Anonymous, their content changed to include gay pride messages, images of the rainbow flag and links to gay pornography.

Anonymous hacker WauchulaGhost told Newsweek that some 1,500 accounts were hacked and that the attacks were in retaliation “for the lives lost in Orlando,” in reference to the worst shooting attack in recent US history on Friday, in which 49 people were killed at the Pulse nightclub in the Floridian city by a man who claimed allegiance to IS.

“Daesh [IS] have been spreading and praising the attack, so I thought I would defend those that were lost. The taking of innocent lives will not be tolerated,” said the hacker.

The usernames of compromised accounts were all changed to say “Jacked by a Ghost,” in reference to the hacker’s Twitter handle, and included messages such as “I’m gay and proud” and “Out and proud.”

WauchulaGhost said the accounts were deleted by Twitter after the infiltration.

The hacker also posted links to gay pornography during his attack on the affected Twitter profiles but said the imagery was not explicit.

“One thing I do want to say is we aren’t using graphic porn and our purpose is not to offend Muslims,” WauchulaGhost said.

“Our actions are directed at jihadist extremists. Many of our own [group of hackers] are Muslim and we respect all religions that do not take innocent lives.”

The hacker added that he would continue the campaign aided by two additional hackers known as Ebony and Yeti.
